The scene in Hampshire

Hampshire is two port cities, a cathedral city and a ring of commuter towns. The coast and the north of the county feel quite different, but the motorways keep them close.

Hampshire has one of the larger groups of couples outside London, alongside a bigger group of single men and a handful of single women – a good county for couples hoping to meet other couples.

Southampton

Hampshire's largest city and one of the country's busiest ports, with a big university. Winchester is 12 miles north and Portsmouth 20 minutes east.

Portsmouth

An island city built around its naval base and historic dockyard, with ferries across to the Isle of Wight.

Winchester

The cathedral city at the heart of the county – smaller, quieter and easy to reach from both coast and north.

Basingstoke, Andover and Fareham

Busy commuter towns, with Basingstoke and Andover facing London and Fareham on the coast road.

Getting around: the M27 runs along the coast between Southampton and Portsmouth, and the M3 heads to London – Waterloo is under 90 minutes from Southampton by train. With VIP you can search by distance across the whole county.

Meeting up: Southampton and Portsmouth sit at either end of the M27, about half an hour apart, so it makes sense to search both cities together. Winchester, just inland, is a quieter choice for a first drink.
