What Michigan is like

Most of Michigan’s people live in the Lower Peninsula, and most of those in the south-east around Detroit. Grand Rapids is the big city of the west side, Lansing the state capital in the middle, and Ann Arbor and Flint sit within easy reach of Detroit. Further north the towns thin out towards the Upper Peninsula, across the Mackinac Bridge.

Couples make up the biggest share of our Michigan members, more than single men, and there are plenty of single women too – most of them around Detroit. There is a sizeable group of couples over 55 as well.

Detroit and the suburbs

The biggest group, across the city and the suburbs of Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties.

Grand Rapids and West Michigan

The west side’s main city, with the Lake Michigan shore not far away.

Lansing and mid-Michigan

The capital, with Ann Arbor and Flint closer to Detroit.

Northern Michigan and the UP

Fewer members and longer distances – Traverse City, the lakeshore towns and the Upper Peninsula.

Getting around: I-75 runs north from Detroit through Flint towards Mackinac, I-96 links Detroit, Lansing and Grand Rapids, and I-94 crosses the south of the state. Winter weather matters here – it is worth agreeing a back-up date.

Meeting up: Detroit’s suburbs stretch a long way, so a couple in Macomb County and a couple in Ann Arbor are close to an hour apart. Pick somewhere in between, and keep a first drink low-key.
