What Washington is like

The Cascade Mountains split Washington in two. West of them is the green, rainy Puget Sound region – Seattle, Tacoma, Everett and Olympia – where most people live, with Vancouver across the Columbia River from Portland. East of the mountains is drier, more open country, with Spokane as its city.

Our Washington membership splits evenly between couples and single men, and single women are fewer. Seattle leads, then Spokane and Tacoma.

Seattle and the Eastside

The biggest group – Seattle itself, with Bellevue and the suburbs across Lake Washington.

Tacoma and the South Sound

Tacoma, with Olympia further south.

Spokane and the east

Eastern Washington’s city, closer to Idaho than to Seattle.

Vancouver and the south-west

Across the river from Portland, Oregon.

Getting around: I-5 runs north to south through Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia and Vancouver, and I-90 crosses the Cascades from Seattle to Spokane – about four and a half hours, over a mountain pass that can close in winter.

Meeting up: around Puget Sound, distances on the map can mislead – a ferry or a bridge can add an hour. If you live in Vancouver, treat Portland as part of the same search.
