What Essex is like
Essex runs from the edge of east London out to the estuaries and seaside towns of the coast. Chelmsford is the county’s city and county town; Colchester, older and further north-east, is its other big centre; Southend-on-Sea sits at the mouth of the Thames; and towns like Brentwood, Basildon and Harlow belong as much to the London commuter belt as to the county.
Most of our Essex members are single men, with a solid group of couples. With London so close, it is worth searching both sides of the M25 rather than just your own town.
Chelmsford and mid-Essex
The county town at the centre, with good links to everywhere else in Essex.
Colchester and the north-east
Colchester with Clacton and the Tendring coast beyond it.
Southend and the estuary
Southend-on-Sea, Leigh and the towns along the Thames estuary.
Brentwood, Basildon and Harlow
The London side of the county, where many people split their week between Essex and the capital.
Getting around: the Elizabeth line reaches Brentwood and Shenfield, c2c runs from Fenchurch Street to Southend, and Greater Anglia trains link Liverpool Street with Chelmsford and Colchester. By road it is the A12, the A127 and the M11, with the Dartford Crossing over to Kent.
Meeting up: with central London under an hour away by train, a first drink in town is an easy option – neutral ground where neither of you is likely to be recognised. It is a good option if you would rather not meet on your own doorstep.
