What Hertfordshire is like
Hertfordshire wraps around the northern edge of London. Watford and Hemel Hempstead lie in the south-west; St Albans, with its abbey and Roman past, is at the centre; Hatfield and Welwyn Garden City are just north of it; Stevenage and Hitchin are up the A1(M); and Hertford and Bishop’s Stortford look east towards Essex.

Meeting up: London is a short train ride away, so a first drink in town is easy to arrange; within the county, St Albans is central and busy enough to stay low-key.
