What North Yorkshire is like
North Yorkshire covers more ground than any other English county, from the Pennine valleys of the Dales in the west, across the flat Vale of York, to the cliffs and harbours of the North Sea. York is the obvious centre, Harrogate its smarter neighbour, and Northallerton the county town, with market towns and villages spread thinly between them.
Our members here are mostly single men, with a good number of couples and a handful of single women – and they are spread out. Few live in the same town as each other, so most conversations start between people twenty or thirty miles apart.
York and the Vale
The biggest cluster, in the city and the commuter villages around it.
Harrogate and Knaresborough
Close to Leeds as well as York, so it pays to search both ways.
Scarborough and Whitby
Seaside towns at the end of the A64 and A171 – further from everyone else, so worth a wider search.
Skipton, the Dales and Teesside
Skipton at the gateway to the Dales in the west, and Middlesbrough and the Teesside towns at the northern edge.
Getting around: the A1(M) and A19 run north to south, the A64 links York with Scarborough, and the East Coast Main Line stops at York and Northallerton. In a county this size, an hour’s drive for the right meet is normal.
Meeting up: York is the natural halfway point for most of the county, and a busy city is easier to be anonymous in than a market town where everyone knows your car. If you live somewhere small, keep your photos private until you have talked properly.
