What South Yorkshire is like
South Yorkshire is four places that have grown into one another: Sheffield, the big city in the hills on the edge of the Peak District; Rotherham just down the valley; Barnsley to the north; and Doncaster out on the flatter land to the east. Each has its own centre and its own loyalties, but none is far from the others.

Getting around: the M1 runs past Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley, the M18 and A1(M) serve Doncaster, Sheffield’s Supertram reaches Rotherham, and Doncaster is on the East Coast Main Line.
Meeting up: The Don Valley joins Sheffield and Rotherham, and the whole county is within about half an hour of its middle – so a first drink rarely means a long journey. Searching into North Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire as well widens the choice.
