The scene in Devon

Devon is one of England's largest counties – two coastlines, the Bristol Channel to the north and the English Channel to the south, with Dartmoor in the middle. Two cities, the English Riviera and dozens of market towns mean members are spread right across it.

Our Devon members are split almost evenly between couples and single men, with couples just ahead – a good balance for a rural county – and they are spread between Exeter, Plymouth, Torbay and the north.

Exeter

The county city, at the end of the M5. For a first drink, Gandy Street, the Cathedral Quarter and the quayside are full of independent bars – busy enough that nobody looks twice.

Plymouth

Devon's largest city and a naval port. The Barbican and Royal William Yard are relaxed waterfront spots for meeting someone new – and from here you can look across the Tamar into Cornwall too.

The English Riviera

Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, with Newton Abbot just inland where the A380, A381 and A38 meet. In a holiday town, two people sharing a drink on the harbour front is the most ordinary thing in the world.

North Devon

Barnstaple is the hub for Ilfracombe, Bideford, South Molton and the villages around them. Quieter and more rural – the A361 puts Exeter and Taunton within about an hour.

Getting around: the A38 links Plymouth and Exeter, and the M5 carries on north into Somerset and Bristol. With VIP you can search by distance, so you are not limited to your own town – look across the whole county, or over the border.

Meeting up: the county is wide and its roads are slow, so agree a halfway point early – Exeter suits most of Devon, and Newton Abbot sits between Torbay and Dartmoor. In smaller towns where people know each other, keep anything that identifies you off your profile until you know who you are talking to.
